POLICE SAY ARREST NEAR IN WATERGUT MURDER

May 11, 2001 — St. Croix police have new information on the shooting death of Dion Benjamin near the Red Brick housing community Wednesday night.
St. Croix Deputy Police Chief Novelle Francis said Friday that homicide investigators "are following new leads that could lead to an imminent arrest" in the third murder case on St. Croix this year. Francis said detectives are trying to determine who shot Benjamin, 33, to death as he sat in his Mazda mini-van near Watergut around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Francis again urged anyone with information to contact detectives at 778-2211 or the emergency number 911. He declined to comment on specifics of the case or on reports that witnesses had observed a vehicle leaving the Watergut area about the same time of the shooting.
Officers responding to reports of shots fired in the Watergut area found
Benjamin slumped over in his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.
