Art Show About St. Croix's Maroon Coast Will Open

June 10, 2006 – The Fort Frederik Museum will hold a reception for a new art show called "St. Croix's Maroon Coast: Artists' Impressions" from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday, June 30, at the museum in Frederiksted. The art show will commemorate the cultural, historical, economic, ecological, recreational, and spiritual values inherent to the northwest corner of St. Croix.
Over 20 artists and photographers will present artwork that focuses on the area's beautiful environment. They include: Maria Henle, Tina Henle, Steve Simonsen, Carol Lee, Kasey Canton, Cynthia Male, Luca Gasperi, Elisa McKay, Therese Trudeau, Stephanie Schoyer, Marjo Aho, Ted Davis, Kenrick Durand, Carly Voight, Jan Giles, Carolyn Roblyer, Pam Carr, Emy Thomas, Susan Sikorski, Kate Kroska and Sondra Catts. Their artwork will also honor the heroic spirit of escaped enslaved Africans called maroons who once lived amongst the hidden caves, cliffs and gullies.
Guests at the opening will be entertained by the Six Pack Band. Proceeds from the artwork sales will benefit the conservation, sustainable management and protection of the northwest corner of St. Croix. The show, which is sponsored by The Nature Conservancy; Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism and the Fort Frederik Museum/DPNR/VISHPO, will remain open until July 28. It is being held in conjunction with "Emancipation: A Look at our Past to Give a Vision for the Future."
