Brief: Territory Gets Federal Highway Safety Funds

The territory has more than $400,000 coming from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for seat-belt enforcement and other highway safety programs, according to a statement from Government House.
Most of the money is from an annual formula grant distributed as part of nationwide funding for highway safety programs, Gov. John deJongh Jr. said in the statement. But a second grant of $75,000 "must be used to implement and enforce occupant-protection programs to reduce deaths and injuries from riding either unrestrained or improperly restrained in motor vehicles,” deJongh said.
The funds come at a good time, while the V.I. Police Department and the Office of Highway Safety are working to encourage motorists to drive safely, deJongh said.
