The three-story Island Movement Yoga and Wellness Center is hidden in plain sight in downtown Christiansted and welcomes hundreds of members 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Located across the street from Government House, many will remember the top floor of the historic building as Hondo’s, a popular hangout in the 80s. The building, reportedly built in 1765, has been quietly transformed, leaving no reminders of the nightclub.

Mariesa Barbara, co-owner, gave the Source a tour of the facility and talked about the activities. In addition to weight and exercise areas, there are two large yoga studios with hardwood floors. Yoga practitioners can experience infrared heat panels for cell generation and muscle recovery if they wish, Barbara said. Vinyasa, Yin and restorative classes are available.
Barbara explained the extensive renovation at the facility, stating, “We were searching for a yoga studio that prioritizes the community and meets you where you are.”

In the fitness gym areas, there are a dozen personal trainers available to help participants sculpt or strengthen themselves.
Additionally, there is a facial club with monthly 30-minute treatment; several aestheticians available for massages, a spiritual wellness class and training for yoga teachers. Members are also welcome to join Reformer Pilates classes.
Other enhancements found at Island Movement include a 15-person sauna and cold plunge in the lower level. There also is a larger area available to rent with a sauna, workout area and cold plunge and an open area for private groups.
Weekly and monthly membership fees, class prices and registration forms can be found on the website: www.islandmovementstx.com.
