June is Men’s Health Month and the Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC) joins the Men’s Health Network in celebrating this special awareness period. The goal is to heighten the public’s awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect men and boys.
“We want to take time this month to educate men, their families and the public on a wide range of men’s health issues including prostate, lung, skin and testicular cancers, cardiovascular problems, diabetes and mental health concerns.” said SRMC CEO Bernard A. Wheatley.
“Men often ignore when their bodies are telling them to get a check-up! Men’s Health Month is a call to action for all men and their families to take ownership of their health and well-being. You can’t tackle a health issue if you don’t know it exists.”
On the June 16, the Friday before Father’s Day, the staff of SRMC will join thousands across the country wearing blue in support of the men in their lives, and they are encouraging VI residents to do the same.
“Father’s Day is a great time to remind the men in our community that they are loved by families and friends and how important it is for them to take care of themselves,” said Luis Amaro, chief medical officer. “Men continue to have fewer regular doctor visits than women. Many health problems facing men are preventable and Men’s Health Month is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups and preventative screenings.”
SRMC staff encourages the men in the Virgin Islands community to make healthy lifestyle choices, make regular annual visits to the doctor, get educated on health concerns affecting men and boys. They should also start general health conversations with their male friends and family members.
