Sept. 5, 2003 – The Estate Whim Museum has new exhibition space and a new exhibit putting it to good use. The display is of a collection of 28 photographs of Caribbean images taken in 1912, and it will hang through Oct. 24.
Titled "People and Places: Traveling Around the Caribbean in 1912," the collection consists of pictures from an album of photographs shot during a cruise to the Caribbean aboard a vessel named the S.S. Guiana. "The ship departed from New York and its itinerary included stops throughout the West Indies," according to a release from the St. Croix Landmarks Society, which operates the Whim Plantation and Museum.
The images selected for the exhibition include town and country scenes from Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Guadeloupe, St. Croix and St. Lucia. They explore "aspects of daily life in the Caribbean in the early 20th century," the release states.
The photographs are from the permanent collections of the Landmarks Society Research Library and Archives.
The release states that the newly available space will enable the museum to present "changing exhibitions on a variety of topics."
The museum currently is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children. For more information, contact curator Pedra Chaffers by e-mailing to Landmarks Society or by calling 772-0598.
