July 11, 2006 – Two teenagers were killed and two others remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition, following a one-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in the Mon Bijou area.
Police spokeswoman Shawna Richards identified those dead as 19-year-old Delroy Prescott of Mon Bijou, the driver of the vehicle; and passenger Raheem Anderson, 18, of Mary's Fancy.
Avery Toby, 18, of Estate Strawberry; and Carlos Nieves, 17, of Estate Profit were passengers in the rear of the vehicle, a 2006 Chevy Cobalt.
Richards said Toby suffered severe trauma to the head and that arrangements were being made late Tuesday evening to airlift him to Puerto Rico for further treatment. The extent of Nieves' injuries is not yet known, Richards said.
Ambulances from both St. Croix Rescue and the V.I. Department of Health responded, and Richards said that Rescue officials had to use the Jaws of Life to pry the four young men from the car, which Richards described as being "totaled."
"Police have not ruled out speed as a factor in this unfortunate accident," she said.
According to initial police reports, the vehicle was traveling from west to east on Frangi Pani Road when Prescott lost control of the vehicle.
Richards said that the vehicle veered off the road and collided with a chain-link fence and that the car was impaled by one its metal posts before coming to rest against a wall at No. 457 Frangi Pani.
"One of the men was impaled by the metal post," Richards said.
Emergency responders on the scene said that Anderson, the front seat passenger, was impaled by the metal pole and that it struck Toby, who was sitting directly behind Anderson, in the head. The pole narrowly missed impaling Toby's skull, according to emergency responders.
Richard said that the investigation is continuing.
