Aug. 22, 2006 – Police are looking for a man who opened fire on police officers near the Gallows Bay ferry dock Sunday night. He is described as a short haired Hispanic male between 26 and 35 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall, about 210 pounds. At the time of the incident he was wearing blue jeans, white sneakers and a light blue or white T-shirt.
Police received a call at 911 from someone saying the man was carrying a bag full of guns on the Island Lynx ferry that runs between St. Croix and St. Thomas.
When police responded shortly after 9 p.m. they observed a man fitting the description and carrying a bag, who disembarking from the ferry.
When police officers approached him, the man became "belligerent," a release from the Police Department said. He then threw the bag at the officers and ran off. When police pursued him, he opened fire on the officers.
The release said, "Officers stopped returning fire due to safety reasons but continued to pursue the subject," who then jumped into the water.
He was last seen running toward Hospital Street.
No one was injured in the incident.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah would not say Tuesday morning what was in the discarded bag, as the investigation is ongoing.
