Danish Scientists Plan UVI Seminar on Aug. 23
Visiting Danish scientists will present a seminar at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 23 in Chase Auditorium (Business room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus with a videoconference link to room 401 in Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. The UVI community and the public are invited. The seminar topics include: How can sea grasses get enough phosphorus to sustain growth in oligotrophic, carbonate environments? And, does sulfur cycling play a role? These scientists will be part of the Galathea III global expedition scheduled to visit the Virgin Islands in March of 2007. They are interested in collaborating with scientists in the Virgin Islands. More information on the Galathea expedition is available at www.galathea3.dk/uk. Caribbean Anthology Marks 20th Anniversary Milestone
"The Caribbean Writer," a literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands, has reached a milestone. The 20th Volume of the annual anthology, which features the work of writers in the Caribbean and literature with a Caribbean focus, was recently released. Editor and UVI Professor Marvin E. Williams said that the longevity of the anthology speaks to the continued need of an outlet for writers of the region and literature about the Caribbean. Big Trees in the U.S. Virgin Islands Book Featured on Web Site
A new web site for UVI's recently published "Remarkable Big Trees in the U.S. Virgin Islands" is now available. The site includes a description of the 136 page paperback that is subtitled "An Eco-Heritage Guide to Jumbie Trees and Other Trees of Cultural Interest." It includes information on where to purchase or how to place mail-orders. Also included is a preview of the books' table of contents. Registration is Ongoing for UVI-CELL On-site and Online Courses
Registration is ongoing for courses offered by the University of the Virgin Islands — Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. UVI-CELL provides unique educational opportunities to stimulate professional advancement and personal growth. On-site course offerings include: Gemological Institute of America Programs (Gem Identification, Colored Stones Grading Lab, Accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP) Diploma Program), Basic AutoCAD, Intro to Massage Therapy, Desktop Publishing, Intro to Insurance and Captive Management, Intermediate Computing for Seniors, International Computer Driving License, Intro to Digital Photography, Basic Web Design and Common Sense Financial Planning and Investing. CELL also offers more than 300 online programs. Students can now register for any UVI-CELL course online. Relay Race, Faculty/Staff vs Students Softball to Open St. Thomas Activities
UVI's St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office is seeking faculty and staff interested in participating in the annual Round 'de Campus Relay Race and Softball Challenge scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. Runners will be divided into teams of seven. Faculty and staff can participate in student teams or form their own relay teams. Interested individuals should contact Junie Violenes at the Student Activities Office at 693-1111. The Softball Challenge, which pits a faculty/staff team against a student team will follow the relay race. A barbecue dinner is also scheduled. The meal is free for team participants and $5 for spectators.
Labor Day Volleyball Tournament Set for Sept. 1-3 on St. Thomas
UVI will conduct its 5th annual Labor Day Volleyball Tournament from Sept. 1 through 3 at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. UVI's Buccaneers and Lady Bucs volleyball squads will host club teams from Michigan, Texas, Missouri, the British Virgin Islands and St. Thomas. The tournament is designed to help UVI teams prepare for upcoming competition in Puerto Rico's LAI (Intercollegiate Athletic) League. Matches begin at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, and continue at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2 and at 3 p.m. on Sept. 3. Adult admission will be $2. Children will be admitted free.
St. Thomas Campus Student Activities Schedule
Thursday, Aug. 24 — Student Government Association officer installation — 1 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110). The UVI community is invited.
Friday, Aug. 25 — Round 'de Campus Relay/Softball Challenge — 4:30 p.m. Relay begins at Campus Security Office and ends at Campus Entrance. Softball follows.
Saturday, Aug. 26 — Hike to Brewer's Bay Cave — 9 a.m. meet in Dining Pavilion. Sign-up deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at the Student Activities Center or by calling 693-1111. Participants should wear long pants, comfortable footwear (sneakers/boots) and bring water.
Saturday, Aug. 26 — Games Night — 8 p.m. until at the Student Activities Center — Includes movies, games, music, etc.
Sunday, Aug. 27 — Car Show — UVI Sports and Fitness Center. A limited number of discount tickets are available at the Student Activities Office.
SBDC Offers Veterans Seminar on Starting a Business on Aug. 23
The UVI Small Business Development Center (UVI-SBDC) concludes its "Summer Seminar Specials" series on St. Thomas with a veterans outreach session titled "Starting a Business and Writing a Business Plan." The seminar is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at UVI's the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The session is being presented in collaboration with the VI Office of Veterans Affairs. The presenters are SBDC Business Counselors Daryl Edwards and Mary Joe Williams. Admission is $20 at the door. Individuals who pre-register will receive a $5 discount. Veterans and UVI students, staff and faculty with proper I.D. will be admitted free, however, pre-registration is required.
