Sept 18, 2006 – October is Virgin Islands Family Month, and the Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP) is hosting its fourth annual "It's a Family Affair Walk."
The event begins at 6 a.m. on Oct. 7, and participants will walk from Kentucky Fried Chicken in Sunny Isle along Queen Mary Highway to the Department of Agriculture's grounds, where there will be activities for the whole family.
"We're trying to build strong families in an effort to build a stronger community," said Lillian Sutherland, MOTTEP territorial program coordinator.
Activities include face painting, moonwalk tents, and a fashion show hosted by Zeta Phi Beta sorority. All activities on the grounds are free and there is no entrance fee.
There will be a $10 breakfast available before the walk, and Sutherland urges those who want breakfast to buy tickets from Luis Hospital in advance.
Twin City Lions Club is also joining in on the celebration. The club has offered to give any students participating in the walk four hours of community service to add to their credit.
"We'd like to invite everyone to participate in some activity to promote family," said Sutherland. According to Sutherland, families shouldn't wait for a month to celebrate their unity.
Sutherland said MOTTEP considers all types of families and urges everyone to come out in support of family togetherness and community. "Until we can build family ties, we cannot be 'our brother's keeper,'" Sutherland said.
