Sept. 22, 2006 The month of September has been designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and Senator Craig Barshinger, on Friday, said he would like to encourage all men over age 40 in the territory to get tested for this disease that can often go unnoticed.
Barshinger, chairman of the Senate Health, Hospital and Human Services Committee, said prostate cancer can be life threatening and is prevalent among African-American men. However, with early detection there is an almost 100 percent survival rate.
The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will be providing free screenings this Saturday, September 23, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through a blood test known as the PSA test. A similar opportunity will be provided on St. Croix in January.
"As this month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month I urge all men, myself included, to take advantage of these opportunities and get tested for this disease," Barshinger said. "May the women, daughters and wives in this community do their part in encouraging their brothers, fathers and husbands to get tested."
