DPNR Awards Environmental Grants to Schools

Oct. 18, 2006 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announced that the Division of Environmental Protection has developed a pilot program for youth to study environmental and non-point source pollution issues.
Through its "Youth Putting a LID (Low Impact Development) on Non-point Source Pollution" program, the division intends to increase the level of environmental awareness among public schools and the community at large. It encourages schools to manage the resources on their grounds and surrounding areas to mitigate no-point source pollution through low impact development.
Thirteen local schools St. Croix Educational Complex, John Woodson Jr. H.S., St. Croix Vocational Complex, Evelyn Williams Elementary, Arthur A. Richards Jr. H.S., and Juanita Gardine Elementary on St. Croix; and Adelita Cancryn Jr. H.S., Jane E. Tuitt Elementary, Eudora Kean H.S., Bertha C. Boschulte Jr. H.S., Joseph Gomez Elementary and Evelyn Marcelli Elementary on St. Thomas were awarded $4,000 each to develop programs that include:
