Oct. 24, 2006 — Frederiksted residents were without water Tuesday afternoon because of a ruptured water line on Prince Street. GEC, the company contracted by the V.I. Water and Power Authority (WAPA) to place underground electric lines in the area, broke the underground water line around noon.
According to a representative from GEC, workers were creating trenches for the electricity feeders when they came across "lateral water lines apparently not in the blueprints WAPA provided."
WAPA and GEC came together to work quickly to resolve the situation. According to a representative from WAPA, "We are assisting because all of Frederiksted is currently without water."
Nearby at the V.I. Legislature, employees were sent home early because of the possible sanitary implications of the lack of water. Operations manager James McNamara said the building needed to shut off the air conditioner and closed the bathrooms until further notice. McNamara hoped the situation would be resolved by Wednesday morning because he said, "We can't have employees in the building without running water."
