Nov. 14, 2006 – It is not the Universitys practice to address its developmental and personnel issues in the public arena. However, based on recent public statements from members of the faculty, UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has issued the following statement:
The University of the Virgin Islands continues to be committed to meeting its higher education objectives and serving the Virgin Islands community and its students. The challenge of meeting the goals of the Universitys mission and vision includes examining the appropriate participation of all of its stakeholders, including its faculty, in shared governance at the University. The faculty plays a major role in the success of the University of the Virgin Islands as it does at every other institution of higher learning. As President, I am committed to open discourse with the faculty and other internal stakeholders on the process the University will use to arrive at agreement on how accountability and informed input will be addressed in the shared governance environment at the University of the Virgin Islands.
I would like to assure the general public that the University will remain accountable to its donors and constituents and will continue to abide by the laws of the Territory and standards of excellence in higher education.
As the University evolves, grows and improves it will continue to embrace its core values, including collegiality and shared governance, and will remain focused and consistent with its mission.
