'Cool Lizard' Chosen as Channel 12 Mascot

Nov. 16, 2006 — After hours of discussion, the WTJX-Channel 12 staff has chosen the "cool lizard" to be its future mascot. The original drawing, submitted by St. Croix eighth grader Chrisline Joseph, will be tweaked and converted into a life-size "cool lizard" that will appear at WTJX functions through out the territory.
On Monday, a committee of seven WTJX staff members sat down to evaluate the 35 submissions, which came from schools throughout the Virgin Islands.
In early September, the station launched a contest for young adults, up to the age of 18, to help create its mascot.
According to a release issued by the station, "one of the important aspects of the mascot design was to depict and promote the purpose of WTJX, which is to 'advance the general welfare, education, cultural development and awareness of public affairs of all of the population of the Virgin Islands.'"
WTJX is now deciding on an appropriate name for the lizard.
For her winning effort, Joseph, who attends Arthur A. Richards Junior High School, will receive a $250 savings bond.
Second- and third-place winners Isaiah Schmitt, a ninth grader at St. Joseph's High School, and Cassandra Watson, a sixth grader at Joseph Sibilly School, will receive art supplies.
