Jan. 4, 2007– Police on St. John are still looking for two suspects involved in a fatal shootout and car chase with police that left one St. John resident dead.
According to release issued Thursday evening, preliminary police reports indicate that at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers on St. John stopped a white Toyota Highlander believed to be involved in a series of robberies that occurred on the island last week. The stop was made on Route 10, in the vicinity of Majestic Construction.
The release says that the car did not have a permanent license plate, but bore temporary dealer tags.
Reports indicate that after being stopped, two of the vehicle's occupants opened fire. Officers subsequently returned fire.
The incident resulted in the death of St. John resident Michael Freeman. It is still unknown whether a Police round caused the fatal injury.
Items that were previously reported stolen (including three guns and a knife) were recovered from the vehicle.
As of 5:45 p.m., three suspects involved in the incident were in VIPD custody, while two still remain at large. "An intensive search is under way for the suspects who remain at large. The Police Department is being assisted by Immigration, Customs and Enforcement in the investigation," the release states.
When contacted Thursday evening, acting Police Commissioner James McCall said that the department will provide more information on the incident as it becomes available.
