July 26, 2007 — A $10,000 reward is being offered by Automated Systems America (ASAI-VI) for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the murderer of Trevor Joseph, a decorated National Guardsman shot and killed last Friday.
When he was attacked early Friday morning, Joseph was servicing an automated teller machine owned by ASAI-VI outside the lobby of the Best Western Emerald Beach Hotel near the Cyril E. King Airport.
Directly after the murder, both local and federal agencies swarmed over the airport area. In addition to working with officers from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the V.I. Port Authority and V.I. Superior Court marshals, police said Immigration and Customs Enforcement teams responded from Puerto Rico, providing helicopter support to search the surrounding areas. An "undisclosed" amount of money was taken, police say.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call the police department's Major Crime Unit at 715-5534, police spokeswoman Monyka Johnigan said Thursday.
"The VIPD is utilizing all available resources to help secure the arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators involved,” Johnigan said. She said she could not supply information on whether the federal government is assisting in these efforts, nor whether the robbery is a federal crime.
The island was stunned by Joseph's death. He and his wife, Gail Danet Joseph, are well-known members of the Frenchtown community and parents of an eight-year-old daughter, Takia. Gail Joseph, Miss Carenage of 1981, is a veteran organizer of the community's annual Committee for the Betterment of Carenage Father's Day celebrations.
Joseph, 61, was a St. Kitts native. He moved to Tortola before coming to St. Thomas as a young person, according to a National Guard biography. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1976, where his primary duties were training and recruiting.
He received the National Guard's top recruiting and retention award, the Chief's 50, three times in the territory. He also received a number of other medals and awards over his 30-year military career.
