Feb. 4, 2009 – On Feb. 26, at the Palms Court Harbourview Hotel, 90 junior high and middle school mathletes from St. Thomas and St. John will compete in the chapter competition of the national MATHCOUNTS program. The Department of Education and Rotary Club of St. Thomas II, who also serves as the local sponsor, have organized the event. Schools that will be represented include: Julius E. Sprauve, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Joseph Gomez, Joseph Sibilly, Leonard Dober, Lockhart, Ulla Muller and Yvonne Bowsky Elementary Schools, All Saints Cathedral, Antilles, Sts. Peter and Paul, V.I. "Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall," said Ludence A. Romney, district mathematics coordinator. "Students will be competing individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches in the areas of algebra, probability, statistics and geometry." The four mathletes with the highest individual scores and the members of the top team will advance to the State MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held on March 26, on St. Thomas.
