A 35-year-old St. Thomas man faces a weapons charge after he was arrested Saturday night on St. Croix during a routine traffic stop, police announced Monday.
St. Croix police arrested St. Thomas native Jerome Turnbull and charged him with possession of an unlicensed firearm with an obliterated serial number after a fully loaded 9mm handgun was found in his vehicle during the stop.
According to the statement released by the department, Turnbull is a person of significant interest in several felony cases on St. Thomas.
The vehicle Turnbull was driving was stopped at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday in the Estate Grove Place area after he was observed running a stop sign and turning without signaling.
During the traffic stop police said Turnbull attempted to reach to the floor of the vehicle several times. Police ordered him several times to keep his hands on the steering wheel. Once Turnbull exited the car, police saw the pistol under the floor mat on the driver’s side.
Turnbull was arrested and held on $25,000 bail. He was remanded to the custody of the Golden Grove Adult Correction Facility pending further court action.
