The St. Thomas-St. John District will host its Third Annual Battle of the Books Competition. Smith said that the aim of the competition is to promote reading and highlight books through student activities at the school. “The competition was initiated in 2008 and at that time we only had three elementary schools participating. In 2009 the numbers increased to five elementary schools and two junior high schools competing in two separate competitions. This year we will have participation from seven elementary schools and three junior high/middle schools,” said Superintendent for the District Jeannette Smith-Barry.
The elementary school competition will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 7, at the Curriculum Center in the conference room. The competing schools are: Lockhart, Ulla F. Muller, Gladys Abraham, E. Benjamin Oliver, Yvonne Milliner-Bowsky, Joseph Sibilly and Leonard Dober.
The junior high/middle school competition will take place the following week at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 14, at Curriculum Center conference room. Three junior high/middle school teams will compete; they include: Addelita Cancryn Jr. High, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School and Montessori Jr. High School.
Nancy Christie, district coordinator for Library Media Services, said, “All teams are made up five students with one alternate. In order to compete, each student must have read seven of the selected books and be ready to answer questions on those books.”
She added, “Students have been reading and working throughout the school year in preparation of the May competition so much so that two of the schools, BCB and EBO, held in-school competitions to help in their preparation.”
