Khareem Hughes, a 20-year-old inmate at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility, was arrested Friday in connection with a May 23 incident in which he allegedly struck a corrections officer in the face with a chair and cut the officer in his hand with a shank while being taken to his prison cell following a court appearance.
Hughes has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault, carrying or using a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence, promoting prison contraband, and aggravated assault and battery upon a police officer.
Hughes was held on a $35,000 bail and returned to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
Hughes is one of three suspects arrested in the August 2009 murder of 25-year old Almonzo Williams of Estate Mon Bijou. Hughes was 18 when arrested shortly after the incident.
The murdwer was one of a series of homicides, believed to be gang related, that may have continued as recently as last month with the murder of 22-year-old Rasenjoni Williams, who had been linked by police to the string of killings (See "Police, Youths In Gang Colors Face Off at Murder Victim’s Funeral").
