Man Arrested After Fleeing Police

Police on St. Croix arrested Shamari Elmes on Tuesday morning, charging him with unauthorized possession of a firearm and other charges related to an April 19 incident, the V.I. Police Department reported.

Police said at about 9:40 p.m. on April 19 they saw a vehicle swerving on the road in the Anna’s Hope area and made a traffic stop. Officers said when they approached the vehicle they smelled a strong odor of marijuana. Police asked the driver and Elmes, who was a passenger in the vehicle, to step out of the car, which they did.

According to the officers, Elmes immediately began to run from the area and was pursued by police. Officers saw Elmes fall and drop a bag he was carrying and then run again. Officers retrieved the bag, but Elmes eluded police at the time.

The bag allegedly contained a loaded black Colt .38 revolver and marijuana.

Officers continued to investigate the case and issued a wanted poster for Shamari Elmes, who is 24 years old. A warrant for his arrest was issued June 23.

Elmes was arrested Tuesday about 10 a.m.. He was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, failure to report firearms obtained outside or brought into the Virgin Islands, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and interfering with an officer discharging his duty.

His bail was set at $25,000, which he was unable to post. He was remanded to the custody of the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility.
