First Phase of Library Renovations to Begin Dec. 5

The V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources informs the public that it has received Notices to Proceed for the first phase of library renovation infrastructure projects, previously announced, totaling nearly $2 million from the Office of Insular Affairs’ (OIA) Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Program.

Effective Monday, Dec. 5, the Athalie Petersen Public Library will be temporarily closed for infrastructure renovations and repairs. Throughout the various phases of the renovation projects, the DPNR will issue press releases to update the public of duration of closures and alternative locations for library service, according to a press release issued on Friday by DPNR.

In this current first phase under the Notice to Proceed, the FY 2015 grant funding of $915,000 will be used to make infrastructure improvements at three public library facilities throughout the territory: $250,000 for the Athalie M. Petersen Library in Frederiksted, $600,000 for the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted, and $65,000 for the Elaine I. Sprauve Library in Cruz Bay on St. John.

The FY2016 second phase grant funding of $1,000,000 will be used to make infrastructure improvements at four facilities territory-wide and will supplement the FY2015 grants, (work will commence in 2017): $190,000 for the Athalie M. Petersen Public Library, St. Croix; $105,000 for the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, St. Croix; $125,000 Florence A. Williams Public Library, St. Croix; $100,000 for the Elaine Ione Sprauve Public Library, St. John; and $480,000 for the Enid M. Baa Public Library and Archives, St. Thomas.
