On Saturday, children gathered excitedly at the Alvin McBean Ballpark on St. Thomas to witness the opening of the newest Little Free Library in the territory, a free book-sharing box where interested readers can take or share a book.
The LFL, which spans about two feet in length, width, and height, sits on top of two poles that are, height-wise, perfect for children to reach into. According to Dee Baecher-Brown, president of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, the organization charged with opening the LFLs, opened the first one in 2019 at Havensight Mall through support from Carnival Corporation, Princess Cruises and Princess Cruises Community Foundation.
“We wanted to add little free libraries to the territory to inspire a love of reading, spark creativity and foster community. We want to encourage and support programs that improve literacy and enrich the lives of our children and youth,” said Baecher-Brown.
Currently, there are 13 such libraries throughout the territory, and Baecher-Brown says that there are more to come. The most recent addition at the McBean Ballpark was chosen because, according to the CFVI president, “many children, youth, and families spend their time in the area for sports and other activities. This library is highly visible and accessible for these community members.”
During the library opening, Baecher-Brown did a brief welcome to all who attended. The opening was interactive as well. Several children were present during the event and a group from the Nana Baby Children’s Home also attended. Those in the audience got the chance to hear a book reading from local calypsonian Glenn “Kwabena” Davis. The book, titled “The Lesson Box,” was written by Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach and illustrated by local artist Karen Samuel. Another local artist, Pita Gonzalez, created coloring books that were handed out to the children in attendance. The children even received free reading books.
Baecher-Brown said the turnout was “wonderful.”
“Books for all ages are available at the library, including a variety of genres. CFVI stocks books focused on younger age groups, however community members are invited to share and take books for any age,” said Baecher-Brown.
Children and adults can easily access the little library. A simple latch keeps the door closed.
According to Baecher-Brown, the LFLs are checked monthly. William “Danny” Daniel collaborates with CFVI to maintain all the libraries in the territory, restocking books as needed.
