Easter’s just a week away. Soon, the children of St. John will roam the rolling grounds of Government House at the Battery for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. This weekend, there was a different hunt on a wider field. Some of the island’s youth gathered Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church for a History Hunt of Cruz Bay.
Playing host for Saturday’s History Hunt was the St. John Historical Society. Members welcomed 11 students from local schools, Grades 5-7. There were adult team leaders, history clue sheets, custom-made tee shirts by artist Lisa Etre …
And pizza in the parish hall when the search was over. When the appointed time arrived, three teams set out. The first history clues were found outside the hall, on the church grounds.
They followed the clues to solve the history mysteries, lessons about St. John people, places and things.
Then way across town for a new set of clues at the Cruz Bay Cemetery. Excitement rose as history hunters raced to solve the next clue.
Historical Society President Lonnie Willis said she was pleased with the outcome. “The kids had a good time. The volunteers had a good time. I was pleased to meet the 11 kids who joined us,” Willis said.
