CIB Investigating Harvey Project Shootings; 1 Injured, 1 Dead

One man is dead and another is hospitalized in stable condition after a shooting on Monday night at the Profit Hills Housing Community on St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department reported Tuesday.

On Monday at 8:48 p.m., an off-duty officer reported hearing shots fired in the area of the housing community, commonly known as the Harvey Project. Upon making a check, officers discovered shell casings and blood, according to the VIPD.

At 9 p.m., Juan F. Luis Hospital security officers reported a gunshot victim arrived at JFL via a private vehicle. At 9:07 p.m., detectives at the hospital said another gunshot victim was also in a private vehicle.

Andres Ponce Jr., 23, was pronounced dead by a JFL emergency room medical attendant from multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Ponces’s parents were notified. The other victim was treated for injuries sustained from the shooting and remains stable, the VIPD said in the press release.

According to the 2022 Source Homicide List, this is the 10th homicide on St. Croix and the 15th in the territory.

A preliminary investigation revealed the shootings took place in two separate locations in the Harvey Project, police said. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this fatal shooting should call the CIB at 340-712-6082, the CIB Tip-Line at 340-778-4950, 911, or Crime Stoppers VI.

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2022 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing that the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
