Two Drownings During President’s Day Weekend

Two drownings occurred on St. John over the holiday weekend, the V.I. Police Department reported.

Hawksnest Beach

According to a police report, a man and his wife went to Hawksnest Beach on Sunday to snorkel. The woman’s snorkel began to take on water, and the man was able to take her to a nearby reef and began calling out for help, it stated.

A bystander rendered CPR and the victim was assisted to shore where police were notified. The woman was pronounced dead and identified by her husband as Tammy Kincaid, 62,  from Virginia, police said.

Salt Pond Beach

In a second incident, a husband and wife moored their boat at Salt Pond Beach on Monday and left their vessel on a dinghy to snorkel near a reef. The husband attempted to re-enter the dinghy and collapsed once inside, according to the police report.

The victim was transported to the shore where CPR was rendered and police were notified.

The man was pronounced dead and identified by his wife as Mark Burke, 68, from Iowa, police said.
