VIPD Makes Arrest After Double Firearm Discovery

On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Special Operations Bureau Tactical Team arrested Michael A. Smith, 32, after a traffic stop on St. Croix revealed a loaded handgun and additional firearm, the V.I. Police Department reported.

During a routine patrol for “Operation Set De Tone,” officers observed a gold Chevy S-10 pickup truck without a visible license plate. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected the odor of marijuana. A subsequent search of Smith and his vehicle yielded a loaded handgun with 12 live rounds of ammunition and an obliterated serial number and a .22-caliber pistol with five rounds of ammunition. Smith did not possess a license to carry a firearm, according to the police report.

Smith was arrested and charged with carrying a firearm openly or concealed and possession or sale of ammunition. His bail was set at $50,000, the police report stated.
