Crew on Two Quarantined Ships Make Up the Bulk of Thursday’s New COVID Cases

The Virgin Islands Department of Health reported 13 new positive cases of COVID-19 in its daily epidemiology report on Thursday. Eight of the positive cases on St. Thomas are associated with two separate vessels.

All persons aboard both vessels are crewmembers. The vessels are a cargo ship and a private yacht. The department’s epidemiology division is currently monitoring and testing all other crewmembers on board both vessels.

All positive cases from both vessels and their close contacts are safely under quarantine and isolated from others. Both vessels are inaccessible to the public and no one is allowed off the ships.

The Department of Health also reported one other new COVID case on St. Thomas not associated with the quarantined vessels and four new cases on St. Croix. There are currently 66 active cases in the territory – 32 on St. Croix, 29 on St. Thomas and five on St. John.

Staying home is still the best way to protect yourself and others. Wear a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered when in public settings. Avoid close contact by staying at least six feet apart from anyone you do not live with. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Avoid contact with anyone who is sick and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
