The body of Roy A. Frett, a 62-year-old St. Thomas man who had been reported missing by family members, was discovered Monday morning at John Brewer’s Beach, where he had been swimming, the V.I. Police Department reported.

According to police, at roughly 5:17 p.m. Sunday Frett was reported missing by family members. Frett was last seen at around 3:15 p.m. Sunday swimming at Brewer’s Beach. Officers from VIPD, Department of Planning and Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, St. Thomas Rescue, University of the Virgin Islands Security and the Virgin Islands Fire Service conducted a search of the area for Frett but did not find him. The search was suspended at nightfall and resumed at around 6 a.m. Monday.

At about 7:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, St. Thomas Rescue personnel located an unresponsive male floating in the water at the eastern end of John Brewer’s Beach. The male was removed from the water and emergency medical technicians on the scene confirmed that he did not have any signs of life.

Next of kind identified the body as Frett.

The cause of death was unknown as of midday Monday, pending an autopsy. Police said the investigation into this incident continues.
