Man Pleads Guilty to Drug Possession

A Puerto Rican man plead guilty to drug possession charges, U.S. Attorney Delia L. Smith announced Friday. 

According to police, on March 29, 2022, noticed a vessel operating without navigation lights traveling at a high rate of speed from Culebra, PR, towards Hendrick Bay, St. Thomas.

Wesly Albert Amaro, who was operating the vessel, attempted to flee while the co-defendant Brian Santiago  Gonzalez began throwing duffel bags overboard. After Amaro failed to stop the engine of the vessel was disabled. 

Police said they later recovered three duffel bags containing 79 kilograms of cocaine. Federal sentencing will be determined after consideration of guidelines and other statutory factors.
