Two 16-year-olds Shot and Killed in Two Days; This Time on STX

Another 16-year-old was shot and killed, this time on St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department reported Sunday.

A concerned citizen notified 911 Saturday of an unresponsive male in a vehicle in the vicinity of the old Queen Mary Highway Service Station, according to the police report.

When Emergency Medical arrived on scene, they checked for signs of life with negative results. The victim appeared to have been shot multiple times to his upper body and succumbed to his injuries, the police report stated.

The victim was identified by his next of kin as 16-year-old Amon Walcott, the report stated.

Investigation into this matter is ongoing, police said.

Walcott’s death marks St. Croix’s 10th homicide of the year and brings the territory’s total to 20 since the start of 2023, according to the Source Homicide List.*

Acting Commissioner Mario Brooks expressed condolences and urged the community to provide any information surrounding this crime and other crimes.

“Our community is in shock and mourning following the tragic death of a 16-year-old male who was found shot to death. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time. These heinous crimes have no place in our community, the loss of any life is a tragedy, but it is especially gut-wrenching and heartbreaking when it happens to someone so young with their whole life ahead of them. We implore our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time. Our silence only allows these senseless acts of violence to continue, and it is up to each and every one of us to take a stand and do our part to keep our community safe,” Brooks said.

“We ask that anyone with information about this crime contact the VIPD immediately through 911, the CIB tip line at (340) 778-4850 or Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-TIPS. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim during this tragic time.”

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2023 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing, which the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
