St. Croix Man Charged with Carrying a Firearm

A 39-year-old St. Croix man was arrested for carrying a firearm, police said Sunday.

Karmal A. Michael of Williams Delight, St. Croix, was stopped by police after allegedly running a red light Sunday, according to the V.I. Police Department. When officers approached the vehicle, there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and they noticed a green leafy substance in a bag, the report stated.

The police asked Michael if he had any other narcotics in the vehicle, and he said yes, at which point he began rummaging through the center console, according to the VIPD. The officer told Michael to exit the vehicle, at which point he attempted to drive off but eventually turned off the engine, the report stated.

Upon further search of the vehicle, VIPD found a black Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun in the center console, the report stated.

Michael was charged with carrying a firearm and openly or concealed and possession of stolen property. Bail was set at $50,000. Michael was unable to post bail and he was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice rights of
hearing.
