A routine traffic stop on St. Croix during the police department’s Operation Vigilance led to the discovery of a firearm, ammunition, drugs and a large sum of cash, the V.I. Police Department reported Monday.
On Saturday, May 4, at approximately 10:40 p.m., while members of the VIPD were executing Operation Vigilance, when they observed a white Toyota Echo without a rear license plate traveling northbound in the vicinity of Sam’s Gas Station. The units engaged a traffic stop and officers observed the handle of a firearm sticking out from underneath the driver’s seat when the driver exited to present his requested documents, according to the police report.
A search revealed a backpack with ammunition, and marijuana, which was packaged
for sale, and a large sum of cash in the bag, as well as in the open glove compartment, the police report stated.
William Libert, 34, was arrested and charged with carrying of firearms; openly or
concealed, possession of an unauthorized firearm in a vehicle, carrying of a firearm(s);
openly or concealed; evidence of intent to commit crime of violence, possession or sale of
ammunition, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, the report stated.
His bail was set at $50,000. He was unable to post bail and was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing, police said.
