The Florence A. Williams Public Library was closed until further notice on Tuesday after experiencing multiple break-ins and burglaries over the past two weeks, the V.I. Planning and Natural Resources Department announced.

According to DPNR, the most recent incident occurred over the weekend, when computers “and other valuable equipment” were stolen. The library will remain closed while the V.I. Police Department investigates and the library staff begins to clean up, the department stated.

The library in downtown Christiansted was shuttered for years after taking extensive damage during Hurricane Maria. In March, officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the rehabilitated facility, which was slated to fully open to the public several weeks later.

The library temporarily closed again in July due to emergency maintenance issues.
