Cancer survivor and Cancer Support of the Virgin Islands Director Barb Michaud wants people to know that 100% of all funds go directly to patients in our community — a rarity for many nonprofit groups. Michaud was interviewed on-camera by the Source in an effort to let people know the value CSVI provides to Virgin Islanders.

Cancer Support of the Virgin Islands is a nonprofit organization based in the USVI that has been providing support for cancer patients in the community since its inception in 2005. The organization continues to raise funds for individuals battling the disease, and 100% of donations go directly to assisting patients.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and CSVI has been holding numerous fundraising events on St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix during “Pinktober” with the goal of raising $250,000. Donations to CSVI will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000.

With the many challenges that come with cancer, CSVI assists patients financially and emotional support throughout their journey to recovery.

Michaud stressed to viewers the importance of how donations profoundly impact people battling cancer. She received financial assistance from CSVI while she battled her illness, and now she has made it her mission to “pay it forward” for other cancer warriors in the territory.

CSVI is the largest nonprofit organization in the USVI to provide financial assistance with patients’ medical and non-medical expenses. Patient grants help with medical treatments, tests, hotel and travel while undergoing treatment, prosthetics, household expenses, hospice care, and more.

When asked how residents can help support the group’s initiatives, Michaud explained that all events are posted on their website, CancerSupportVI.com, and she invites everyone to get involved. (A direct donation link is also available here.)

CSVI is a sponsored fund of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
