A man died of gunshot wounds Sunday night in Estate Barren Spot on St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department reported.
The victim was identified by next of kin as 23-year-old Luis Perez of Castle Burke.
According to the Source homicide list, it was the sixth homicide on St. Croix since the beginning of the year, the 11th of the territory. The Source list is based on VIPD reports, but unlike the police and other media, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing. This can lead to a variance in the number of incidents reported.
According to VIPD, at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, the 911 emergency call center was notified of shots fired in Estate Barren Spot. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered a vehicle in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Perez, had gunshot wounds about the body. He was transported to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital for treatment, and later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident is being investigated by the VIPD Major Crime Unit.
