The St. Thomas/St. John Interscholastic Athletic Association finally got the 2012-2022 Volleyball Season started on Tuesday, April 3, 2022, at Antilles School’s MCM Center.

This league was originally scheduled to commence on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. Unexpected school closures, other Covid-19-related issues, and Carnival activities postponed the start of the league for two weeks. On April 19, there were 23 teams registered to compete in five different divisions (Middle School Girls, Junior Varsity Boys, Junior Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys and, Varsity Girls). The league is down to 15 participating teams competing in three divisions. Despite the drop in numbers, league commissioner, Mark Daniel, is very excited that the children are getting this opportunity to play. “It’s been over two years that our student-athletes have been prohibited from playing in-door volleyball,” said Daniel. “It was great to hear the players calling for the ball, coaches yelling instructions, and parents cheering on their children.”

The defending varsity girl’s champions Antilles School Lady Hurricanes picked up right where they left off two years ago with a straight-set win over the Lady Vikings of All Saints Cathedral School (25-6; 25-12). The Lady Canes Junior Varsity Girls team also secured a win against the defending junior varsity champions Charlotte Amalie High School Lady Hawks in three sets (21-25; 25-14; 15-10).

The varsity girl’s division featured two more games on this opening day. Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy had all they could handle with Gifft Hill School from St. John. Montessori came away with a narrow (25-23; 25-23) victory over the Barracudas of Gifft Hill School. Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Lady Rays played well clipping the wings of their arch-rivals the Charlotte Amalie High School Lady Chicken Hawks in straight sets (25-9; 25-15).

Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Varsity Boys Team wrapped up the action with a (25-19; 25-21) victory over the Volts of Montessori. Antilles varsity boys also secured a win via forfeit.

All games scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, 2022, will be played at the MCM Center. Here is the schedule:
