Have you ever wanted to sing with a band? How about singing with Quelbe Resurrection? If that’s your dream, now is the time to join the St. John Recovery Choir, which is beginning rehearsals the week of Jan. 27 in preparation for Sing St. John’s “All Ah We” events in April.
The choir will hold weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays at Our Place in Coral Bay from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays at Hawksnest from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Singers are welcome to attend one or both rehearsals each week. Additional rehearsals with the band will be held on selected Mondays.
“For the ‘All Ah We’ concert and dance party in April, we are singing every song with Quelbe Resurrection Band,” said Kristen Carmichael-Bowers, director of Sing St. John. “There is a special chemistry when we sing together; it’s an exhilarating collaboration.”
Sing St. John’s “All Ah We” events begin with a dance party in Coral Bay featuring Quelbe Resurrection Band and St. John Recovery Choir at Our Place on Friday, April 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.; food and drinks will be on sale starting at 4 p.m.
The Cruz Bay concert event will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in Frank Powell Sr. Park; local vendors will offer food, drinks, and fracos for sale starting at 2 p.m.
The Cruz Bay event includes performances by Quelbe Resurrection Band, St. John Recovery Choir, The Senior Singalong, Ocama Youth Choir, The Echo People, VI for Life Quadrille Dancers, and Raven Phillips, bamboula dancer. The last hour will be devoted to dance music.
Both the Coral Bay and Cruz Bay events are free and open to the community and visitors.
As with all of Sing St. John’s programming, there is no required fee to participate in the St. John Recovery Choir. There is a materials fee that can be waived by checking a box on the registration form https://www.singstjohn.org.
Songs are taught to the choir using lyrics, sheet music, and recordings so that the music is accessible to everyone, regardless of experience or skill level.
“It’s such a rare opportunity for new singers to sing with a professional band,” said Carmichael-Bowers, “but on St. John, this is the way we roll. We make it happen, and not only is it fun, but it works.”
If you’re shy, give it a try, says Carmichael-Bowers. “If you’re at Our Place on Tuesdays playing games and want to stay to sing with us for a rehearsal, or if you happen to be at Hawksnest on a Saturday and want to pop in and sing, we’ll always welcome you!”
Sing St. John is jointly supported by a grant from VI Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC, a federal agency, by VI Lottery and by community donors.
