HUD Provides Grants for Health Hazard Studies

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing grants for two home-based health studies.

As much as $2 million is available for the Lead Technical Studies grant program, which seeks to mitigate paint hazards in homes, and $5 million for the Healthy Homes Technical Studies grant program, which examines the links between housing and health.

HUD expects to make three to five awards for the Lead Technical Studies grant program and five to eight awards for the Healthy Homes Technical Studies grant program. The awards will depend on the number of eligible applicants for each program along with the requested amounts, in addition to other factors.

A news release announcing the grants said the department is funding studies to improve HUD’s knowledge of housing related health and safety hazards, and to improve or develop new hazard assessment and control methods. A large focus is being emphasized on lead as well as other health and safety hazards.

The Lead Technical Studies program is primarily to gain knowledge on how to improve and find cost-effective methods for evaluation and control of lead-based paint hazards in residential properties.

The Healthy Homes Technical Studies program is examining the link between housing and health.

“HUD is especially interested in applications that will advance our knowledge on priority healthy homes issues by addressing important gaps in the science related to the accurate and efficient identification of hazards and the implementation of cost-effective hazard mitigation,” the news release said. “This includes studies using implementation sciences in identifying specific conditions under which proven residential environmental hazard interventions in targeted housing types and residential settings can be sustained to improve intervention efficiency and efficacy.”

Those who can apply include:

– Public housing authorities
– Nonprofits
– Small businesses
– Independent school districts
– City or township governments
– State governments
– Native American tribal organizations
– County governments
– Public and state controlled institutions of higher education
– Private institutions of higher education

Applications will remain open until June 15.
